Castaway Cay vs. Lookout Cay: Comparing Disney’s Private Islands

If you’ve been dreaming of taking a Disney Cruise, chances are that one (or both!) of Disney’s beautiful islands will be on your itinerary. Castaway Cay has been a longtime favorite of Disney cruisers, but Disney’s newest private island, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, offers its own unique island experience.

You might be asking, “but what’s the difference?” While you can expect a gorgeous beach and fun in the sun at both - there are quite a few differences between the two. Let’s take a closer look at what you can expect from each island!

The Island Experience:

Castaway Cay

Located centrally in the Bahamas, this island combines a colorful, tropical paradise with a playful shipwrecked theme. You’ll see touches of classic Disney fun throughout the island - the snorkeling lagoon has an underwater scavenger hunt to search for hidden character statues, Olaf’s Summertime Freeze has fun themed frozen drinks, and you can find subtle Disney details scattered around the island if you pay attention. It’s quick and easy to get to the island - simply walk or take a short tram ride! The island is relatively compact - everything is a short walk away, and very easy to navigate with littles.

Lookout Cay

Located in the southern tip of the Bahamas, this island has a more traditional Bahamian feel. The vibrant colors, local inspired design, and cultural details can be seen throughout the island, with less obvious hints of Disney. Lookout Cay is a little bit of a trek to get to - but it is 100% worth it! After debarking your cruise ship, it’s about a 10-15 minute walk to the tram stop (but often very breezy!). Disney provides wagons for the littles, and shuttles for those with mobility concerns. From there, you board an 8-10 minute tram to the bluest water you’ll ever see! In general, things are very spread out at Lookout - there are wooden pathways throughout, which makes the amount of extra walking doable, even with children.

My take

People often complain that the walk to Lookout’s tram stop is long - but in my experience, it really wasn’t that bad! It was windy the day we went, so that made it easy. Our Castaway day was MUCH hotter - so that walk (although shorter) was actually tougher! If you have mobility concerns, Lookout may be tricky to navigate. As for the vibe, they both had a different feel and I truly loved both equally!

Food & Fun:

Food

Both islands are pretty similar here - the food is essentially the same with BBQ style entrees & sides (maybe slightly better at Lookout), and don’t worry - you can still find unlimited soft serve at each! I do prefer the seating area at Lookout, as there seems to be more space, and all in the shade.

Characters & Photo-ops

Each island has our favorite friends in fun, tropical island attire! Plenty of photo ops at each island as you make your way to the beach. Castaway’s photo ops feel like a blend of nautical charm and classic Disney, while Lookout’s leans into vibrant Bahamian design with more subtle Disney character touches.

Entertainment

Both islands offer character dance parties for some fun interactions! Lookout Cay also has entertainment inspired by Bahamian culture, like ‘Rush! A Beautiful Celebration at Goombay’ which showcases Junkanoo music, traditions, and a parade.

Beach Day:

Castaway Cay

The water at Castaway is a beautiful, clear, turquoise color. It is very calm and lagoon-like - you won’t find many waves here, which makes it perfect for easy snorkeling! There are both family friendly and adults only sections, with an abundance of beach seating and umbrellas. Castaway Cay offers more “ocean view” seating as opposed to Lookout (more on that below!). If you want to grab a drink & float in the water - this is your spot!

Lookout Cay

The ocean at Lookout Cay is the most gorgeous baby blue color! There are waves here - but nothing too wild! My young kids were able to safely play in the ocean. Similar to Castaway, Lookout has both family friendly and adults only sections with a plethora of beach seating. One difference here - there was less direct oceanfront seating. Some of the beach chairs and umbrellas were set back from the ocean, behind a dune. Now before you think this is a terrible set up - those chairs were actually right in between the splash pad & beach. So for us, it was the perfect location for bouncing back and forth between all the island has to offer. If your family loves to body surf or boogie board - Lookout’s beach is perfect for you!

My take

While I LOVE the color of the ocean at Lookout, the calm lagoon water at Castaway is where you can find me! If you asked my kids, they would say splashing in the waves was more fun. Either way - as long as I can see my toes in the water - can’t go wrong!

Activities:

Water Slides & Splash Pads

Castaway Cay has ‘Pelican Plunge’ which is a floating platform with two waterslides that empty right into the ocean! There is a height requirement of 38 inches to participate. Lookout Cay has ‘Rush Out Gush Out’ which is a splash pad/water play area with smaller slides. Which one will be best for your family greatly depends on your kid’s ages! For my kids, Rush Out Gush Out was an absolute DREAM. We bounced between the splash pad there and the ocean all day. But if your kids are older, Pelican Plunge is the clear winner!

Kids Clubs

Both islands have kid’s clubs for your Oceaneer aged children, but infants to age 2 will need to stay with their parent. Castaway offers a teens club on the island, while Lookout does not.

Water Sports

There is no shortage of water sport options at either island! You can enjoy activities like snorkeling, kayaking, aqua trikes, paddleboarding, parasailing, boat excursions, and more! Most of these experiences do have an additional cost.

My Final Thoughts:

I really love both islands for different reasons! But I will say, Lookout Cay was the winner for my family! My kids could not get enough of that splash pad and playing in the ocean waves. Overall, our day at Lookout was more comfortable too - with a near constant breeze, we found ourselves managing the summer heat much easier. Both islands are unique in their own way, and really elevate the Disney Cruise Line experience!
